Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery

“Oral and maxillofacial surgery is the specialty of dentistry which includes the diagnosis, surgical and adjunctive treatment of diseases, injuries and defects involving both the functional and esthetic aspects of the hard and soft tissues of the oral and maxillofacial regions.”

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMS) Education and Training:
Many years of education and training are required to become an oral and maxillofacial surgeon. After college, four years of professional education are necessary to become a dentist. After receiving his/her doctorate, the dentist must be selected for advanced training in oral and maxillofacial surgery. Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons are required to successfully complete a 4 year hospital residency, similar to medical doctors.
